It seems that economic slowdown has hit the influential BCCI too. Never penny-pinch, particularly after the birth of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the proverbial 800-pound gorilla of world cricket is now busy cutting costs across multiple fronts
The board has reiterated in a circular sent out to all IPL stakeholders, including the eight franchises, that it will not host the IPL's opening ceremony from this season on. The circular added that the play-off standing fund for the same season is also being cut.
The board has recommended a cut of nearly 50 per cent in the playoff standing fund for 2020, a move that the franchises are currently discussing intensely. The circular sent out by the BCCI states that the IPL 2020 final winner will get Rs 10 cr, the runner-up will get Rs 6.25 cr, and the third and fourth-placed teams will get Rs 4.375 cr each (loser of qualifier 2 playoff match & loser of the eliminator play-off match respectively).
IPL's 2019 edition winner had won Rs 20 cr as prize money and rules ruled that the purse would be equally divided between the winning franchise and the players. The runner-up received Rs 12.5 cr while they received Rs 8.75 cr for the sides finishing third and fourth.
